Warming our collective cold, wet, hearts were images that were shared by a local Reddit user who was able to capture the essence of kindness and community when describing proactive citizens helping flash flood victims.

Recent heavy rains have caused flooding around the Klang Valley. In yesterday’s downpour, 10 cars were trapped, along with a school bus, on Persiaran Surian in Kota Damansara.

Redditor jwrx described panicking children who were quickly rescued by fellow Malaysians who were in the area. Motorcyclists were the first to lend a helping hand, wading through the waist-deep waters to take the children, one by one, to safety. Others went back to get the children’s belongings, such as schoolbags, that were left behind on the bus.

Comments on the thread echoed jwrx’s observation of the bikers being the first to help out: one man described a stalled car in the middle of a major KL road last week, and the first to stop and help were a group of true gentlemen bikers who pushed the car to the side of the road.

Everyone was soaked to the bone, but our eyewitness described a jovial scene of those helping doing so with a smile on their face, and later laughing and joking by the side of the road as they waited for the traffic to dissipate.

1Malaysia for real guys: Never forget that all of us are a community first, and foremost.

PSA: You might want to check that your car insurance comes with flood protection! These flash floods can happen very quickly, and it’s the luck of the draw if you’re in your car at the wrong place, at a very wet time.
