The Special Branch is keeping a close eye on McDonald’s boycotts today

Selangor police have been preparing to monitor and manage demonstrators expected to hold boycott rallies in front of McDonald’s fast-food outlets today.

State police chief Datuk Abdul Samah Mat says the Special Branch has been monitoring the protests, which are being organised by several NGOs.

“Because there are many McDonald’s outlets in the state, every district police chief has been instructed to monitor the people involved in the demonstrations.

“The move is being taken to ensure there are no incidents of violence by the demonstrators,” Abdul Samah told The Rakyat Post when contacted yesterday.

He said that while police did not have any information on where these planned demonstrations were expected to take place, priority was being given to McDonald’s outlets in urban areas.

He also did not have any information on permits issued for the demonstrations, if indeed there were any. Abdul Samah said the matter of permits would be handled by district police chiefs.

McDonald’s Malaysia has been the biggest target in rising condemnation of companies operating in Malaysia with alleged links or offering support to Israel, currently engaged in the latest military standoff against the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip in Palestine.

McDonald’s has had to clarfiy earlier this week that the announcement it would give away free burgers and drinks today was a hoax. An entrepreneurial organisation has also called for Jakim to revoke the halal certification issued to companies with links to Israel, including McDonald’s Malaysia.
