SPAD suspends bus company’s operator licence after ‘runaway bus’ accident

The company that owned the ‘out-of-control’ bus that rammed into 10 vehicles near the Menora Tunnel has had its operator’s licence suspended following the accident.

According to a New Straits Times report, the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) took action on July 10 against  Qistina Express Sdn Bhd due to non-compliance of mandatory safety requirements.

The suspension will reportedly last one month.

“(The move was) based on SPAD’s audit of the company’s fleet yesterday pending findings from the ongoing Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) investigation into the crash,” SPAD chief executive officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah was quoted as saying in a statement.

He added that such a suspension would serve as a ‘strict reminder to the industry to ensure that they adhere to the SPAD Industrial Code of Practice (ICOP) at all times as public safety is a foremost priority’.

On Sunday, a bus lost control along the North South Expressway near Ipoh, hitting 10 vehicles in heavy traffic before coming to a stop. Preliminary investigations showed that the bus’ brakes had failed
