Despite it being licensed by the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS), a giant billboard advocating freeing former Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim from prison has gone missing.
The billboard, put up last week at the expense of Selayang member of Parliament William Leong of PKR, is simply no longer affixed to its frame by the road.
mStar‘s Izra Abdul Rahman reports that neither Leong nor the MPS know anything about the sign’s removal.
When contacted, Leong claimed to have heard of the sign’s removal from his personal aide.
“I heard that someone had removed (the billboard). It’s not something shocking; I had expected this to happen,” the MP said.
“It’s not an issue over the license. What has happened only shows that we are still far off from creating a mature democracy in this country.”
Leong adds that he has checked with the MPS to determine if this was a local government action on the billboard, but the municipal council denied they had any involvement in the removal.
When asked who he thought was behind the incident, Leong declined to name names.
“I will choose not to. It’s not nice, I will not accuse anyone because I don’t know who did it for sure.
“All I can say is, whoever took down that billboard are, to me, people who do not yet understand what democracy means.”
He plans to put up the sign again, but could not give a definite time frame.
Anwar Ibrahim, who once served as Deputy Prime Minister under Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s tenure as PM, has been jailed in Sungai Buloh Prison since February last year, on a sodomy conviction.
