The Malaysian Animal Association took to their Facebook page earlier this week to share two perturbing stories from both Johor and Seremban, alleging that Vietnamese nationals were openly selling dog and cat meat using the social media site.
The first post, including disturbing screencaps of the original post shared by a Vietnamese couple, offered “fresh and raw” dog meat for sale. Accompanying photos showed a cooked dog carcass with hands digging inside the body. They told followers that they were charging RM18/kg (US$4.65/kg) for their goods, claiming the dogs were strays.
A local animal lover had originally brought the photos to the MAA’s attention, highlighting that while this may be common practice in their home country, it was not something that is acceptable in Malaysian culture.
Only days later, another post was shared by the MAA – a group of Vietnamese nationals in Selangor were offering cat meat for sale at an undisclosed location in the state. We warn you that clicking through the link will show you the un-pixelated, perturbing images.
The group were discovered after a local tip-off reported a significant amount of so-called adopted cats on their property.
Unfortunately, there are no laws that prevent the sale of dog, or cat meat in Malaysia, despite the fact that the country’s Department of Veterinary Services has stated it is against their guidelines.
MAA is asking that the government take action, and make the consumption and trafficking of cat and dog meat against the law.
