Sleeping vagrant in Jalan Ipoh turns out to be dead body

After initially being brushed off by passersby as a sleeping homeless person, a man lying near a shophouse in Jalan Ipoh was discovered to have been dead.

The death was reported by members of the public in the vicinity at around 8.30am yesterday.

A witness at the scene who wanted to be known only as Lim, 41, told Harian Metro that at first he and others in the shophouse area assumed the man was a vagrant who had fallen asleep by the road the night before.

It was only until later that it was observed the man did not appear to be breathing.

“We didn’t dare touch the body, and called the police immediately,” he said.

“We’re not sure when he ended up where he did, but we only realised he had passed away at around 8.30 in the morning.”

Sentul district police chief ACP R Munusamy said his officers received two separate phone calls about the incident.

Police were scrambled to the scene, with a unit from the KL Contingent Headquarters (IPK) Forensics team in tow.

“The death was confirmed by officers from the Civil Defence Department (JPAM), who were also present,” he said.

No signs of weapons or objects that could have been used as such were found at the scene.

“Checks showed that the victim’s right ring and pinky fingers were lacerated, indicating that the victim might have been scratching at the nearby walls before his death.”
