Slaughtering of gigantic, one-tonne cow draws thousands to small Malaysian village

For the residents of a small village in Kuala Terengganu, this year’s Hari Raya Aidiladha celebrations were a little bit different.

A crowd of more than a thousand people, some from as far as Singapore, flocked to Kampung Losong Datuk Amar to witness the unusual slaughtering of a gigantic, one-tonne cow in conjunction with the Hari Raya celebrations.

According to The New Straits Times, the cow — which is of the Charolais breed — is three times the size of a normal one and is a premium breed of the taurine beef cow from the Charolais region of Burgundy, in eastern France. It is raised primarily for its meat.

A Charolais cow reportedly costs more than RM14,000.

Badan Ukhwah Darul Iman (Budi) chairman Zulfadzli Hassan told the daily that visitors began streaming in to the village early Monday morning to catch a glimpse of the cow, after news about the gigantic animal got out via social media a couple of days before the event.

The crowd, according to Zulfadzli, continued to swell way past noon.

“They wanted to see for themselves if it was really true, and not a hoax. It was as if their eyes were deceiving them – they had never seen a cow so big. But they went home content,” Zulfadzli was quoted as saying.

He added that the meat of the giant cow would be distributed to about 2,000 members of the public, especially the underprivilleged.

Soon, images of the cow started flooding social media as the photos went viral on Facebook, with many Netizens marvelling at the size of the creature:
