Thinking about bribing the cops with some duit kopi (loose change for coffee) for not using your seatbelt? Well, sucks to be you because the bar has been raised and your small change won’t cut it.
Recently, a duo pleaded not guilty at the Johor Bahru Session Court for trying to bribe a policeman using RM90,000 (US$2,085) last year.
According to Bernama, Singaporean Donavan Sia Qi Xun, 27, a college student in Kuala Lumpur, and his friend Law Wen Xiang, 32, are accused of committing the crime in front of a restaurant in Taman Suria, Johor.
The bribe supposedly persuaded the cop not to charge Sia with “cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property” under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
They also pleaded not guilty to an alternative charge under Section 214 of the Penal Code for providing gratification in exchange for screening an offender from legal action at the same location, time, and date.
If found guilty, the pair will be sentenced to one-fourth of the maximum term of imprisonment allowed for the crime.
They could also face a hefty RM450,000 fine, or both.
The charge carries a fine of not less than five times the sum or value of the gratification, or RM10,000, whichever is greater.
Judge Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail granted them each RM40,000 bail with one surety. He also directed that they report to the Johor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office once a month.
The court scheduled a hearing for Feb. 19.
We would like to stress that we do not condone any form of bribery and are law-abiding citizens. Anything implied otherwise in this article is merely satire.
