After images of him changing his car number plates at a Johor-area petrol station went viral in May of this year, Singaporean Tan Hock Lai has been fined by a Malaysian court.
Pleading guilty to the charge that was read to him, the 44-year-old was handed down an RM8,000 (US$2,000) fine under the Road Transport Act 1987. The charge carries a penalty of up to RM20,000 in fines, and/or five years in jail. Tan was unrepresented in court.
In the early hours of May 18, Tan was spotted changing his license plate number at a petrol station near the border between Singapore and Malaysia, later driving off into the sunrise where he was later caught by cameras exceeding the speed limit. The plates on his gold BMW were traced to another car owner, after netizens launched a bit of online sleuthing.
