Seremban’s serial shopping mall arsonist caught in the act

After terrorising several shopping malls in Seremban this month, a serial arsonist was finally busted by the authorities.

According to The New Straits Times, the 22-year-old man was reportedly in the act of setting a towel on fire at a hypermarket in Palm Mall around noon on Wednesday when he was caught by a security guard.

Seremban district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Zaki Harun told the daily that the quick thinking security guard spotted the incident via the mall’s CCTV system.

“The guard immediately rushed to the location. He spotted the man, and with the aid of other guards, took him into custody,” he was quoted as saying.

“During questioning, the man admitted to being responsible for four other cases in the city. He admitted to using a lighter to set items ablaze.

“He said he did it for fun,” ACP Muhammad Zaki told the daily, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by fire.

Prior to this, four other fire-related incidents were reported the past month, including a bookstore at the Terminal 1 mall, the garment area in Terminal 2 shopping centre, the men’s clothing section at the Giant Supermarket in Senawang and the women’ clothing area at Mydin Hypermarket.
