A senior citizen has been sentenced to two months prison, and fined an additional RM10,000 (US$2,365), for attempting to bribe an immigration officer.

Lee Kee Hong, 63, faced two charges related to the incident, and issued a jail term for both offenses, to be served concurrently, and dating from his time of arrest, which was September 15. If he cannot pay the fine, the court may imprison him for an additional week.

The older gentleman has been held at Taiping Prison since the time of his arrest.

His charge could have seen him in prison for up to 20 years; however, the magistrate was lenient. In terms of fine, he was given the maximum possible punishment, RM10,000.

Senior citizen Lee admitted to offering RM2,000 to an immigration official on August 17, 2016, via phone call at 6:00pm. The official promptly alerted his superiors.

He later gave the gentleman RM1,000 at a McDonald’s the following evening at 6.30pm.

Lee was trying to secure the release of his friend, a Pakistan national, Qaiser Iftikhar, who had been taken into custody after overstaying in the country.

Corruption officials have certainly sent a message – You try to bribe, you gonna do time. That includes grandparents.
