Selangor prepares for phase 3 of water rationing

If the water level at the Klang Gates Dam does not rise soon, the Selangor state government will have to implement phase three of the water rationing exercise currently being carried out, likely subjecting more people to water cuts.

Selangor state executive councillor Elizabeth Wong said the current water level at the dam was 52.91 per cent; if it dips to 50 per cent or lower, it would cinsidered critical.

“Judging by the water level, I believe we have to be prepared for phase three soon.

“The point of rationing is to ensure everyone has water and so it may be necessary to do so,” she said.

Should phase three be put in place, areas including Melawati and Ampang – which are situated near Klang Gates – would be affected.

Wong said that of the eight dams in Selangor, only the Klang Gates and Sungai Selangor dams were near or at critical water levels. The Sungai Selangor Dam was at 45.33 per cent water capacity yesterday.

Wong said any announcement about water rationing would be made by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN).

However, SPAN chief executive officer Datuk Teo Yen Hua said the decision could only be made after confirmation from the Selangor Government’s Economic Planning Unit (UPEN).
