Selangor government admits water conservation campaigns haven’t worked

The Selangor state government today confessed that despite advising residents to conserve their water supply, the campaigns it had launched since last year have not translated into public awarenes.

Zaidy Abu Talib, chairperson of the Permanent Committee for Infrastructure and Public Facilities, Farming Modernisation and Basic Agro Industries, told Sinar Harian that state agency statistics show Selangorians consume between 235 to 250 litres of water each, per day.

He added that if the state average usage of water remained at 250 litres per person per day, Selangor could end up wasting 880 million litres of water by 2020.

To tackle the situation, MB Azmin Ali’s administration has met with federal agencies to come up with an effective enough public campaign to raise awareness, and to work out a comprehensive plan to eliminate water wastage.

“We’re prepared to launch new comprehensive campaigns, with one due to be unveiled in November; however, it all remains to be seen, as monsoon season is in November. We will discuss this further,” Zaidy said at the Selangor state legislative assembly today.

At the same time, the state government said it had commissioned consultants to seek out and vet possible new sources of water, to be tapped for consumption in the future.
