Scusa scusa: Italian authorities say man was actually from Mali, not Malaysia

A lesson in geography from Malaysia to anyone out there who might confuse us with other countries, like Mali, for example.

Malaysia is in Asia, between Singapore and Thailand. Our capital is Kuala Lumpur, and we’ve got the world famous Petronas Towers.

Mali is in Africa, bordering Mauritania, Algeria, and Burkina Faso among others. Its capital is Bamako, and is home to the equally famous Timbuktu, once an important stop along trade routes.

Yesterday, Italian authorities were left having to explain to Malaysian Embassy officials in Rome that the man they had apprehended was from the African nation of Mali, and not our fair Southeast Asian land, as had been widely reported across media outlets.

Turns out a Malian slapped a kissing couple near a Rome mosque, and then later found himself in an altercation with police, and was subsequently taken into custody.

No harm, I mean … we’re used to certain levels of absurd here, but happy that it wasn’t one of our own. We still love pasta, pizza and the legend that is Gigi Buffon.

Maybe you guys can rehabilitate this angry man to fight the people out there who keep asking for pineapple on pizza? Just a thought.

Ciao!
