Like they say: all good things must come to an end.
Family theme park Desa Water Park will close its door permanently on September 30, according to a report by The Star Online‘s Bavani M.
Located at Taman Danau Desa in Kuala Lumpur, Berjaya Corp — the operator of the theme park — were reportedly given a notice by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to vacate the premises this Friday.
While the details remain sketchy, The Star Online exclusively reported that the 16.99ha land, which belongs to DBKL, has been sold to Aset Kayamas Sdn Bhd.
“DBKL has sold it (the land) to the highest bidder,” said Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Mohd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz.
According to Mohd Amin, the land will now be populated with multi-storey towers, bungalows as well as condominiums.
The Federal Territories Affordable Housing (Rumawip) will also reportedly be built on the land.
The new owners of the land, meanwhile, told the news portal that they acquired the land about two months ago, and their plans for the area are still in the early stages.
“It is going to be a mixed development with a gross development value of RM6bil to RM7bil.
“We are certainly taking into account the need for affordable homes, as well as leveraging on the lake area,” Michael Chai, the executive director of Aset Kayamas Sdn Bhd, was quoted as saying.
Chai also paid homage to the Desa Water Park, calling it an “iconic” landmark in Kuala Lumpur.
“We appreciate the fact that Desa Water Park has been an iconic establishment in this area for many years.
“Which is why we are planning something to give back to the community,” he was further quoted as saying.
On Thursday, the theme park made an official announcement on their Facebook page:
Home to the famous ‘Thunderbolt’ — dubbed one of Asia’s longest uphill water coaster — Desa Water Park opened its doors in 1998 and has since entertained more than four million visitors from all over the country.
We will miss you, Desa Water Park. Please be good.
