Students at SMK Lingga, a secondary school in rural Sarawak, had quite the surprise of an unannounced visitor in the shape of a giant python, who was spotted by the school’s cook during their tea break yesterday afternoon.

Most of the school’s students were in the dining hall when the incident occurred, and the cook was able to promptly alert a nearby security guard. Civil Defense Force (APM Sarawak) authorities were contacted, and deployed the scene.

Authorities arrived at the school 30 minutes later, at 5pm, and were able to subdue the snake within 20 minutes.

The python measured in at over three-meter-and-a-half meters, weighing no less than 13kg. APM officers believe that the reptile had lost its way and become lodged in the school’s drain.

If your (our) bleeding heart is wondering what the snake’s fate holds in store, APM staff has said that it will be transported back to their Sri Aman operation room and used in their staff training program on how to handle, and catch, serpents.

Which is probably a better end for its sake, as other locally caught snakes are often used as a food source for some communities.

In case you were wondering how to cook a python – we’ve been told (hi, Google) that it can double in for bacon bits in a pinch, and if you’re wondering how to braise that reptilian baby, treat it like you would some ribs: low and slow is the way to go. And when in doubt, just deep fry it til golden brown, and hit it with some spice. Coconuts KL suspects sri racha mayo would be delightful.
