Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress never fails to fill tech fans across the globe with anticipation of the latest and greatest gadgets coming out this year, and as expected, Samsung, the world’s biggest smartphone manufacturer, has unveiled their new flagship phone: the Galaxy S5.
The new dust- and water-resistant Galaxy S looks similar to last year’s wildly successful S4 with a slightly larger 5.1″ 1080p Super AMOLED screen, but with a dimpled soft-touch back that’s more reminiscent of the company’s Galaxy Note 3 and LG’s original Nexus 7 tablet.
On the inside, the Galaxy S5 ships with Google’s latest 4.4.2 build of Android OS, with Samsung’s proprietary skin. This time around, Samsung’s latest and greatest features a 16 megapixel camera with 4K video capture capabilities, and true to form, the South Korean giant continues to attempt to go toe-to-toe with Apple by packing the S5 with its own fingerprint scanner, plus a heart rate monitor. The phone is powered by a 2.5GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and a battery that promises 20 per cent better stamina than the S4’s, and a new low-power conservation mode to squeeze a little more life out of the phone when things get dicey.
The Galaxy S4 will ship in four colours: black, white, blue and gold, although availability will be determined by market. The S5 will launch globally on April 11th; here’s hoping our local carriers will start stocking the phone soon after.
