Saddle up: Dataran Merdeka – Mid Valley bicycle lane to open in April

Want to beat rush hour traffic? You can probably get to your destination a bit faster if you’re on a bicycle. And now City Hall’s got you covered.

A 5.5km cycling lane running from Dataran Merdeka all the way to Mid Valley City will operational from April onwards, as it is currently 85% completed, said Mayor Ahmad Phesal Talib.

The mayor said despite the project’s progress, there were still a few knks for DBKL to work out before the lane is ready for public use.

“The main issue we’re foreseeing is how to design the bike lane to discourage motorcyclists from abusing it as a new shortcut,” he said to Sinar Harian

“We can see this happening with motorcyclists who will do anything to avoid the jams. This is something we’ll need to solve, as there’s not enough manpower for round-the-clock law enforcement.”

DBKL is also in negotiations with the operators of the Jalan Berhala KL Monorail depoh, through which a stretch of the bike lane will pass.

“The path in that location is a dimly-lit, so we will work with the developers to ensure that the area will not attract vagrants,” he said.

“We are also studying a proposal by Universiti Malaya to install solar lamps throughout the cycling route, which would save costs on installing wired electricity, and to facilitate the installation of CCTVs.”

The RM700,000 bike lane is one of three bicycle routes planned by City Hall. The other two lanes will be in Taman Batu Muda and from Wangsa Maju to Taman Melati.
