We could very well be looking at a one-of-a-kind elephant.
The Sabah Wildlife Department recently came across an elephant with turned-down tusks, very similiar to that of a prehistoric sabre-toothed tiger.
The department’s assistant director Dr Sen Nathan told The New Straits Times that the team made the discovery while trans-locating a herd from Felda Umas in Tawau to a new area.
“This is a rare find, but all elephants are unique on its own,” he was quoted as saying.
According to Dr Sen, the elephants will reportedly be released in an undisclosed protected forest.
With a population of only 1,500, the Bornean Pygmy elephants – the smallest elephants in Asia – are listed as endangered species.
