Sabah Quake: Mt Kinabalu search and rescue operations end today

Search and rescue operations in Sabah have wound down around Mount Kinabalu, Sabah today.

The SAR operations, which began on June 5 soon after the earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale hit Sabah, concluded after the final two bodies of victims on the mountain were found, according to Sabah police chief Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman when he was asked by Berita Harian

The remains of Navdeep Singh Jaryal, a Singaporean student and Mohammad Ghazi Mohamed, a Singaporean teacher, will be sent to their home country after further forensic tests in Malaysia, according to a statement from Singapore’s education ministry.

“These are the final two people who were missing. We will stand down the search and rescue by the end of today,” said Ranau police chief Mohammad Farhan Lee Abdullah.

In total, 18 people died as a result of the earthquake.
