Sabah Quake: Donkey’s Ear Peak on Mt Kinabalu collapses

The Donkey’s Ear Peak, an iconic feature of Mount Kinabalu’s summit, has been destroyed in the wake of this morning’s earthquake, the tremors of which hit Sabah’s west coast.

Due to the tremors which rattled through the state at 7.17am today, one of the twin peaks making up Donkey’s Ear collapsed.

Sabah’s Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Masidi Manjun confirmed the matter through his personal Twitter account earlier today:

Zainal Adlin, chairperson of Sabah Parks also acknowledged the destruction of the natural landmark.

“That is what I am hearing,” he said in response to a query on the Donkey’s Ear posed by The Star Online‘s Victoria Brown.

The quake, measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale, originated from a depth of 10km some 16km from Ranau, which was the area hardest hit this morning.

Rescue teams and airlift helicopters have been scrambled to extract climbers stranded on the slopes and summit of Mount Kinabalu. Five climbers are feared dead, but their status is still awaiting confirmation from authorities.
