Sabah MACC probe: Director’s wife owns 94 handbags totalling RM500k

The ongoing corruption probe in Sabah is turning into quite a spectacle.

On Wednesday, the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) put on display during a press conference boxes and boxes full of designer handbags that were reportedly seized by officers.

According to The Star Online, the officers confiscated a total of 94 handbags, which reportedly belonged to the director’s wife.

MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Azam Baki told the news portal that the designer bags were valued at about RM500,000 and consisted of brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Hermes, Verscae and Burberry.

Azam also told The Star Online that MACC officers are still trying to determine the reason why the two Sabah Water Department officials kept more than RM53.7mil in cash with them.

“We are trying to find why they kept such a large amount of money at home,” he was quoted as saying.

Earlier this week, two senior officers of the Sabah Water Department as well as two others have been arrested to facilitate investigations into alleged kickbacks involving RM3.3 billion worth of federal projects.

The suspects have allegedly used their position and power to award contracts to their family members.

To date, MACC officers have recovered more than RM114 million, including RM53.7mil in cold hard cash which took 30 officers almost 15 hours to count, making it the biggest ever haul by the MACC in its 49-year history.
