Errant traders have been reportedly selling “fake” Musang King durians to tourists ill-versed in the arts of the durianity, says Domestic Trade, Co-operative and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin. The prized fruit sells at upwards of RM60/kg (USD$15/kg).
He added that the Ministry would be fighting this by ensuring that Musang King durians were labelled before being marketed. Anyone who tampers with labeling would be subject to prosecution under the Trade Description Act of 2011.
Here’s a cheat sheet for any of those who are looking to buy the real deal, Musang King:

-the thorns are massive, and the pyramids are spaced quite far apart
-the thorns will have gradient coloring from tip to base
-Musang King has a more grey-ish green color compared to other durians, sometimes even golden
-they have a more egg-like shape
-check the bottom for the tell-tale Musang King sign of a five-arm seam

-where the stalk meets the fruit is a spike-less ring

-and finally, Musang King is golden-yellow, creamy, custard-like and sweeeeeet.

Anything else, and you got took.
