Remember when you felt empowered when your bank account balanced tipped over into four digits after all the bills were paid off? You might want to skip this article.

Hong Kong-based sugar magnate Robert Kuok comfortably held on to his poistion as Malaysia’s wealthiest person, acccording to Malaysian Business Magazine‘s annual “Malaysia’s Richest 40” for 2014, in its February 16 issue.

Kuok’s personal fortune stands at RM54.48 billion, a significant increase from his holding last year, valued at RM46.1 billion.

Kuok’s wealth alone makes up just over 25 per cent of the total fortune of the Malaysian top 40, valued at RM217.82 billion. Last year’s total for all 40 high rollers was RM194.86 billion.

His first place ranking puts Kuok well ahead from his competition. In second place is media mogul Tan Sri T Ananda Krishnan with RM33.19 billion, followed by Tan Sri Teh Hong Piow (RM18.07 billion) at fourth and Tan Sri Quek Leng Chan (RM14.11 billion) in fifth place.

The wealth of 2014’s inductees was based on the value of their stakes in listed companies as of January 18th.

To put things in a more global perspective, however, even the wealthiest man in Malaysia can’t afford to buy WhatsApp … not on his own, anyway.
