Robbers hold family at parang-point, run off with RM21,000

Three masked men, armed with parangs, broke into a Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) academic’s home in Gelugor, Penang and made off with money and valuables worth RM21,000.

Early yesterday morning, the men broke into the family home in Changkat Minden, Gelugor and held the 52-year old USM department director along with his wife and four children.

The Malay Mail Online reports that a police spokesperson said, “The victim was woken up by noises outside his bedroom door. Upon checking he was confronted by one of the robbers who then woke the rest of the family and tied them up.”

The children were 18, 17, 10 and five years old.

Police say the men, who were reported to have been speaking in Bahasa Indonesia, ransacked the house and fled with valuables worth RM21,000, including RM2,000 in cash.
