RM20 million worth of drugs from Nigeria seized at KLIA

Between April 15 and 28, officers from the Customs Department at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) were able to foil three attempts to smuggle a total of 107.2 kg of methamphetamines worth RM20.368 million into the country from Nigeria.

Customs director Datuk Chik Omar Chik Lim said the seizure was the biggest haul by his department so far this year, and brought the total amount of illicit narcotics confiscated via air cargo to a total of 233.29 kg, worth a total of RM40.45 million.

According to Bernama, Chik Omar said that on April 15, a box – declared as having contained hair attachments – was recovered from the MAS KLIA cargo warehouse at 8.20pm. It was found to contain 48kg of methamphetamines worth RM9.12 million.

On Monday, two more boxes from Lagos, Nigeria – this time declared to be containers of breakfast cereal – were seized, with 30.35 kg  (worth 5.766 million) and 28.85 kg (RM5.481 million) of methamphetamines found within, respectively.

No arrests have been made as yet. Chik Omar said no one has come forward to claim the three boxes, and the addresses attached to the consignment orders have been found to be non-existent.

He added that the PDRM is cooperating with the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to trace the drug smugglers and their local contacts.
