The final nail may have been driven into the coffin of the Pakatan Rakyat political coalition, with holdout Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) announcing that it, like now erstwhile partner DAP, considers PR to “no longer exist”.
However, PKR, which has its Azmin Ali installed as Selangor Menteri Besar, asserts that Pakatan’s death will not change the status quo in the legislative makeup of Malaysia’s most prosperous state.
Sources told The Star Online‘s Joceline Tan that the unique arrangement that sees Selangor still being governed by a tripartite PKR-PAS-DAP pact was decided upon at PKR’s political bureau meeting last night, and is said to have received the blessing of incarcerated former Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.
DAP and PAS leaders have also been notified of PKR’s stand on the matter, and an official statement sealing the deal is expected to be released later today.
PKR’s statement is the latest in the events signalling the death knell for the coalition which formed on April 1 2008. Yesterday morning, DAP announced that it was of the opinion that Pakatan “no longer exists”.
That in turn was brought upon by PAS’s declaration during its 61st Muktamar on June 6 that it would sever all ties with DAP, despite resolving to remain in Pakatan.
