Retweet your assignment: Malaysia adopts Massive Open Online Courses in unis

Waking up late for your Monday morning lecture might no longer be a problem for university students here, as Malaysia is on track to become the first country in the world to implement Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in public campuses.

Second Education Minister Idris Jusoh told Bernama the initiative was meant to ensure the implementation of online learning by public institutions of higher learning (IPTAs) and reduce class time.

“MOOCs is a learning and teaching method which is effective for IPTAs as students can access the subjects anywhere and anytime through the www.openlearning.com/Malaysianmoocs website.

“For the first semester in the 2014 session beginning on Sept 7 and 8, 16,000 used the MOOCs for compulsory subjects for first year students in the IPTA which are the Islamic Civilisation and Asian Civilisations (Titas), Ethnic Relations, Entrepreneurship, and ICT Competency,” he said.

Idris said his ministry estimates 15% of learning in IPTAs will be conducted through the MOOCs system by next year, with a target of 30% by 2020.
