Restaurants raise prices as living costs soar

As the cost of living in Kuala Lumpur rises to unprecedented levels, on slashed subsidies and looming new taxes, restaurant owners claim they have no choice but to increase meal prices.

Owner of Restaurant Ukhwah Restaurant Rakyat in Jalan Medan Tuanku 1, Idris Sani said, “We have been forced to raise our prices to accommodate the higher cost of vegetables and meat.”

He claims it’s the first time he’s raised his meal prices in five years.

Price checks reveal that a roti canai and teh tarik breakfast set that used to cost RM1 has gone up to RM1.50 since Saturday.

Idris said he had cancelled his affordable “1Malaysia menu” lunch set six months ago because of rising costs. The set consisted of a plate of rice with a meat or vegetable dish and a glass of syrup, going for RM4.

“Demand for this set was low but in the past two months, many customers have been asking us to bring it back,” he said.

According to Idris, the cost of beverages has risen by up to 20 sen a glass, while meat dishes have gone up in cost by RM1.50 to RM2, depending on portion size.
