Register births as soon as you can, govt reminds parents

A reminder, because some parents — often in rural areas — still fail to register the birth of their children; and the whole process just gets more complicated the longer they procrastinate.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said failure to register births would result in children missing out on the benefits they are entitled to, especially education.

“Sometimes parents got too excited to have a baby and forget to register their birth, or they did not know the process so they will have difficulties to register after the deadline. If the children are not registered, it is feared it will become a social problem in the future because the child does not receive an education and is unable to be independent,” Bernama quoted him as saying.

Parents are required to register the birth of their child within 42 days.

He added that the National Registration Department (NRD) has conducted programmes in the interior zones of Sabah and Sarawak, stressing the importance of personal identification documents.

“But there were many cases of unregistered marriage, especially along the border areas causing difficulties in obtaining citizenship for their children,” he was quoted further.
