Spokesperson for the “red shirt” Malay movement Jamal Md Yunos, just days after his arrest for threatening a riot in Petaling Street, has announced plans for another mass protest – in Kajang.
The Sungai Besar UMNO division leader said the new protest in Kajang was aimed at expressing dissatisfaction over assemblyperson Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail’s alleged incomepetence in addressing the needs of her constituents.
Wan Azizah is PKR president, Federal Opposition leader, and wife of jailed former Federal Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.
“I have on three occasions met with Kajang folk, comprising Malay, Chinese and Indians who claimed they had previously supported Wan Azizah but have since felt they were cheated and were disappointed with her,” Jamal said, as quoted by the New Straits Times.
“Most of the residents claimed she had yet to resolve their flash flood woes, which cost traders hundreds of thousands of ringgit in losses.”
Arrested on Friday under Section 105 of the Criminal Procedure Code for making statements construed to be threatening a riot by red-shirted Malay protesters in Chinese-majority Petaling Street, Jamal was released a day later as the Royal Malaysian Police chose not to place him under a remand order.
On Malaysia Day, September 16, Jamal was instrumental in galvanising Malay sentiment in support of the Gathering for Malay Dignity, or #Merah169, which saw about 20,000 Malaysian Malay protesters marching through Kuala Lumpur and converging in Padang Merbok.
The September 16 rally was ostensibly a show of force from the Malay community, whose rights rally organisers said had been disrespected and trampled upon by “DAP Chinese” elements within the Bersih 2.0 electoral reform movement.
Bersih 2.0 organised a 24-hour sleep-in protest, #BERSIH4, on August 29 and 30.
During the #Merah169 rally, several violent incidents broke out across KL, most notably at the entrance to Petaling Street, where protesters attempting to breach police barricades were met by Federal Reserve Unit troops and water cannons.
