Rayani Air can apply for new licence, says deputy Transport Minister

Rayani Air — the troubled airline that’s hoping to restart the business — may get a shot at a second chance.

It needs to submit a fresh application to the Department of Civil Aviation Malaysia (DCA) and the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) if it wishes to resume operations, Bernama reports.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi was quoted as saying that the company would have to submit a new business strategy and engage a partner with sound financial backing.

“They (Rayani Air) have expressed desire (verbally) to the government to restart their operations, and want to reactivate their licence which was revoked,” he reportedly said.

“However, the government through the DCA and Mavcom cannot consider their request due to several reasons and has advised them to apply for a new license if they want to continue operations,” he was quoted further.

On Monday, Rayani Air chief executive officer Ravi Alagendrran had said on Facebook that the airline was working hard to have the DCA and Mavcom allow the business a second chance.

In June, authorities revoked the airline’s Air Service Licence (ASL) following a thorough check into its operations, while the DCA cancelled the Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC).

The airline — with halal in-flight meals and no alcohol — began operations as the country’s first Syariah-compliant airline on Dec 20 last year, with its maiden flight departing from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi.

Ravi and his wife Kathiyani Govindan were its founders.
