Rat droppings, cockroach eggs found in 23 food premises during DBKL check

Authorities reportedly made some pretty disgusting discoveries at eateries in Setapak recently, and 23 premises were ordered to shut.

The Star Online‘s Shalini Ravindran reported that health officers from the KL City Hall (DBKL) found rat droppings on work spaces and cockroach eggs in the corners of cupboards — among others — during a spot check on premises in Danau Kota.

Eight of these places were ordered to close immediately while the rest were issued compound notices for various offences.

“We have been conducting these types of operations since 2011, and there has been an upward trend towards food hygiene by both operators and visitors. People are more conscious about where they eat and the cleanliness of the place,” Federal Territories Ministry (Planning and Development) deputy secretary-general Datuk Mohd Sani Mistam, who also led the operation, told The Star Online.

“Operators, meanwhile, feel the pinch when they are forced to close and make an effort to keep the place clean,” he was quoted further.

The daily said that from Jan 1 to May 27, close to 400 restaurants in the city have been ordered to shut down for violating safety and health rules.
