Random checks on mall escalators nationwide after horrific KL Sentral accident

A horrific escalator accident that ended with a four-year-old losing half his foot has triggered a nationwide check on mall escalators.

The Star Online reported that the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (Dosh) will begin random inspection on safety equipment, design and maintenance history of escalators, with a priority to those in the Klang Valley.

Last week, little Dzil Mikhail Nasaruddin became the latest victim in a series of similar incidents — 31 cases from 2011 and May 2015, the portal reports — when part of his left foot was severed after it got stuck in an escalator at KL Sentral.

The Department’s director-general Datuk Mohtar Musri told the portal that escalators are normally inspected once every 15 months for licence renewal purposes.

“This will be on top of the normal inspections. We will look at the safety equipment on the escalators and whether the complex has the proper design codes and signages based on our checklist,” he was quoted as saying.
