A man died in a motorcycle crash after assaulting a cop and leading police on a chase yesterday in Kedah.

The unidentified man, believed to be mentally unstable, was said to have defaced the walls of the Kedah palace before punching a female cop outside the Kota Setar district police headquarters in Alor Setar, Kedah. He died in the ensuing pursuit in what the police described as an accident.

“A police team gave chase and warned him to stop but they were ignored. In his attempt to escape, he rode his bike so fast he crashed onto the barrier by the side of a road in Bedong, on the outskirts of Sungai Petani,” Kedah police chief Kamarul Zaman Mamat said Thursday.

“By the time paramedics arrived, he was pronounced dead.”

According to reports, the 35-year-old man first arrived at about 3pm to the gates of Istana Anak Bukit, where he spray-painted some graffiti.

He then rode his motorcycle to the district police headquarters at about 5pm and randomly punched a 30-year-old policewoman at the sentry before hurling a fake, holstered pistol at her, all of which was caught on camera.

The police chief said the man was found at Gurun but then escaped on his motorcycle before the police gave chase.

The deceased was reportedly a psychiatric patient at Hospital Alor Setar.
