QZ8501: Indonesia AirAsia admits ‘administrative negligence’

AirAsia Indonesia has admitted that there was ‘administrative negligence’ in events prior to the tragic crash of one of its planes.

The Jakarta Post reported that AirAsia Indonesia had made only a verbal request to  Indonesia’s transportation ministry about flying the Surabaya-Singapore route on Sundays.

AirAsia Indonesia president director Sunu Widyatmoko was quoted as saying that the flight permit issued to them by the ministry allowed its planes to fly the route for only four days a week; Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The budget airliner had then verbally requested to change the flight schedule to Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

“I admitted that administrative negligence occurred when requesting the change in flight schedule, as the verbal information failed to reach the ministry. We will take this as a correction,” Sunu reportedly said.

The doomed flight QZ8501, with 162 crew and passengers, vanished from radars on Dec 28. Bodies were discovered in the Java Sea three days later confirming that the aircraft had crashed.

Earlier this week, divers recovered the aircraft’s cockpit voice recorder which holds crucial information on the details of its crash.
