Prolific surau thief who tied victims up with mobile phone cables nabbed by police

Police have arrested a prolific surau thieft, who stole over RM9,000 (US$2,100) from women at prayers. His bounty included cash, jewelry, and mobile phones that were taken while he pretended to perform prayers.

He had been operating as a faux prayer-goer since June. Over the following three months, the 39-year-old suspect would rob women at surau from Bukit Jelutong to Section 4.

Wearing a robe at surau across the city, so as not to arise suspicions, he would prey on female victims who were there alone.

Robbing them, he would often threaten them with a parang (knife), later tying them up with mobile phone charger cables, according to New Straits Times.

He is also wanted for the robbery various religious school teachers in Kelana Jaya.

Police were finally able to track down the man after he robbed and molested a victim at a surau in Bukit Jelutong. They used CCTV footage from an ATM after he stole the victim’s card and attempted to withdraw money from her account. He positively identified by all of his victims upon seeing the video footage. He was arrested October 13.

A special team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) intercepted him at his home in Kelana Jaya. Seized was the parang used to threaten his victims, mobile phone cables used to tie them up, and several of the stolen belongings.

He is in remand until later today, while police investigate the claims against him.
