Prolific surau thief also drained bank accounts because most of us use our MyKad numbers our PIN

A prolific Penang surau (prayer room) thief, who spent the better part of 2017 stealing the belongings of worshippers who had momentarily left them unattended while praying, also emptied out the bank accounts of her victims using their ATM cards.

Stealing their wallets that contained both their MyKad and ATM cards, the suspect found that many PIN numbers matched with the victims’ identity numbers on their MyKads. Many of the 30 victims used wither the first six digits of their MyKad numbers, or the last six.

Yeesh – humans! We need to step up our personal bank security. Pet’s birthday is a great one.

Penang criminologists went undercover for three months to catch the single mother of four. On the night she was caught, officers reported that she suspiciously left halfway through maghrib prayers, and this alerted staff.

She then went to a nearby ATM, where her attempts to withdraw money failed. She then attempted to enter her car, but was stopped by officers.

Worshipers often let their guard down while praying, and the woman would often slip her hand into bags to steal wallets.

Police say that she was an Uber driver who owed loan sharks RM20,000, and stole to pay off her debts.

They added that she tested positive for drugs, which is pretty much de rigueur these days, innit?
