Pre-GST rates for all prepaid cards: Customs Department

Users of prepaid mobile services, here’s the news you’ve been waiting for: from May 1, prepaid cards will be sold at pre-Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates.

Customs department director-general Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad said a letter had been issued yesterday informing all telcos of the decision, the New Straits Times reports.

“The Goods and Services Tax (GST) on telephone prepaid cards is similar to the tax imposed under the Service Tax Act. We informed them earlier to impose the same method for the GST system on April 16 but the telcos were charging ‘exclusive tax’,” he was quoted as saying.

“So now if prepaid cards are RM 5 or RM 10, they should be maintained without any additional charges,” he was quoted further.
