Authorities have finally caught up with the suspect behind a shop break-in a year ago, after he burgled yet another shop selling luxury handbags just two weeks ago at Kuala Lumpur’s Berjaya Times Square shopping center.

In-store CCTV cameras were able to lead police straight to the man – at a Sungai Besi army camp, where he holds the rank of captain in the Malaysian army. Upon further inquiry, the captain said he turned to a life of crime to pay off a series of online gambling debts.

After stealing the luxury bags – among them Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Hermes – he then sold them on to another handbag store. Police revealed that 70 purses of various brands were seized, which they have estimated to be worth RM250,000 (US$60,000), along with a Kia Spectra car believed to be involved in the break-in.

On May 3, the owner of a luxury handbag shop at the city center mall arrived at his shop in the morning to find the storefront had been ransacked. Less than a week later, using images taken on security footage, police were able to track down the suspect, who is said to be in his 30s.
