Popular Setapak eatery Mali’s Corner fined for not collecting GST

Mali’s Corner is practically a revered institution for those in Setapak (or elsewhere in KL) who crave some good food in the wee hours of the night. It’s a bit of a shock then to learn that the famed char kuey teow restaurant hasn’t been paying its due to the Federal Government.

The Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today fined Mali’s Corner Sdn Bhd RM9,000 for not collecting the Goods and Services Tax (GST) from its customers last year.

Company director Jamali Saat had earlier pleaded guilty to the charge, which fell under the Goods and Services Tax Act 2014 for not issueing the tax invoice when making the tax provision.

In addition to the RM9,000 fine, Mali’s Corner was also ordered to pay the Customs Department 95 sen (uhh…) in GST for not collecting the new tax in one receipt.

The Rakyat Post reports that the company paid the fine.

Still, it could have been worse. Section 33(2)(a) of the GST Act allows for a maximum fine of RM30,000, or two years in jail, or both.
