The police will investigate Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan over his comments and, if they deem fit, call him for questioning, Home Minister Hamzah Zainuddin told reporters today.
He was commenting on his colleague during a press conference about the lockdown, following police complaints filed against Takiyuddin for appearing to dismiss the king’s order to reconvene parliament during a live broadcast.
“If we want to accuse, we need to know what wrongdoing was committed before there is a section (charges),” Hamzah said, later adding: “But we should let the police investigate to determine what was said and how it was interpreted.”
Takiyuddin made the comment to a news portal during a live broadcast on Wednesday night. When asked about his thoughts on the king’s order, he said, “The King did not specify which month the sitting should be held. He only said as soon as possible,” before mentioning that the prime minister had already called for parliament to resume either in September or October as part of the latest recovery plan.
His dismissive tone was deemed as “insulting” to the king and prompted multiple police complaints.
Pakatan Harapan Youth leader Shazni Munir Mohd Ithnin said on Thursday that three police reports were simultaneously made at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Kedah, and Melaka.
“As a minister who has knowledge of the law, Takiyuddin should have taken the time to study the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decree. You (Takiyuddin) are not a ‘schoolkid’ minister – study and look into every word of His Majesty’s decree through the statement by the Royal Palace and the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal,” Shazni told reporters after making a police report.
Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah had on Wednesday ordered parliament to resume as soon as possible, a day after Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin unveiled a new COVID-19 recovery plan that would see parliament reconvening either in September or October. Parliament speaker Azhar Azizan Harun supported Muhyiddin’s plan, to much disagreement from the public.
The last parliament sitting took place on Dec. 14.
