Police officer barred from early voting with claims he had already voted and was not qualified to vote

Mystery surrounds a policeman’s early voting denial over the weekend, and Lance Corporal Ahman Fadli Zahar has since filed a police report claiming he was unlawfully barred from taking part.

Arriving at the Police Family Association’s badminton hall in Bukit Aman at 1pm Saturday, he gave a female Election Commission (EC) worker his MyKad identification card. She subsequently informed him that he had voted already.

Not having voted, Fadli then showed the woman his hands, to illustrate that there was no ink mark on his finger, and thus no ballot cast. At this point, a male EC worker came over, and told Fadli to wait outside.

Waiting two hours outside without answers to a rather straightforward predicament, he was then told to wait until the voting process was over. An EC worker informed him with little explanation that instead of the earlier allegation that he had already voted, they had concurred that he was not qualified to vote.

Huh?

This did not sit well with the Lance Corporal, and he went to the Tun H. S. Lee police station to lodge a report against the EC worker’s claims.

An EC spokesman spoke to local media, telling them that the commission would wait for the outcome of a police investigation before taking action.

Mildly worrying, we hope that this matter can be resolved in time for Fadli to exercise his democratic right, and vote.
