The Malaysian government will cooperate fully in any lawful probe into its companies or citizens, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s press secretary Tengku Sarifuddin Tengku Ahmad reportedly said.
In a statement responding to civil complaints filed by the Department of Justice (DoJ) seeking to seize 1MDB-linked assets, Tengku Sarifuddin reportedly said that ‘Najib has always maintained that the law would be enforced, without exception, if any wrongdoing is proven’.
“The company has been the subject of multiple investigations within Malaysia, including by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, the auditor-general and the bi-partisan Public Accounts Committee,” Malaysiakini quoted him as saying.
“After comprehensive review, the attorney-general found that that no crime was committed. 1MDB is still the subject of an investigation by the Royal Malaysian Police.”
“As previously stated, the Malaysian government will fully cooperate with any lawful investigation of Malaysian companies or citizens in accordance with international protocols. As the PM has always maintained, if any wrongdoing is proven, the law will be enforced without exception,” he was quoted as saying.
In civil complaints filed to seize assets said to be the result of $3.5 billion that had been misappropriated from the controversial state investment firm, the DoJ said 1MDB officials had allegedly used some of the illicit proceeds of the fraudulent scheme to fund the production of the Martin Scorsese film, ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, the Wall Street Journal reported.
1MDB, in a media statement released today, said ‘it is not a party to the civil suit, does not have any assets in the United States of America, nor has it benefited from the various transactions described in the civil suit.’
