PM Najib “disappointed” over media spin on the MARA property scam deal (that mentions him)

It’s not like Prime Minister Najib Razak doesn’t have enough to worry about.

In the wake of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) chairperson Annuar Musa’s remarks today about the shady purchase of the Dudley International House apartment building in Melbourne, Australia, Najib posted a quick statement to his official Facebook page saying thus:

Saya kecewa bahawa kenyataan Tan Sri Annuar Musa diputarbelit oleh sesetengah media. Keputusan hanya dibuat secara…

Apparently, he’s none too happy with how some “media outlets” are focusing on Annuar’s statement that the purchase of the marked-up building by subsidiary MARA Inc was fully greenlit by the National Economic Council, which is chaired by the PM.

The Dudley International House, an apartment building catering to students attending nearby Monash University, was sold to three Malaysians allegedly representing MARA Inc to the tune of AUD22.5 million (RM63.5 million), a full AUD4.75 million over the valuated price.

The New Age newspaper in Australia reported yesterday that difference between purchase price and actual value was then funneled back to the three Malaysians – a “top MARA official”, a “former politcian”, and a Malaysian government official – in the form of illegal kickbacks, essentially laundering the Malaysian people’s money straight into their pockets.

Najib contends in his Facebook post that the purchase was approved via National Economic Council consensus, and not by him alone.

Nevertheless, he vowed that “any party that had misled or attempted to mislead members of the Economic Council” on the matter would be subject to legal action.

After that, we assume he went right back to worrying about 1MDB and Dr Mahathir. Tough times for our fearless leader.
