PM Najib chairs National Security Council meeting today

Prime Minister Najib Razak today sat down for a meeting with the newly-mooted National Security Council (MKN) at the Perdana Putra building in Putrajaya.

Bernama reports that the meeting saw Najib gathering information and advice from Chief Secretary to the Government Dr Ali Hamsa, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar, Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) chief General Zulkifeli Md Zin, former IGP Hanif Omar, and former MAF chief General (Rtd) Mohamed Hashim Mohd Ali, among others.

Yesterday, Najib clarified that this morning’s meeting would be to discuss Malaysia’s security measures, and the developments coming out of last week’s terror attack in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Najib said the country’s security and law enforcement agencies had been directed to step up their efforts to tamp down potential terrorist threats within the country.

The National Security Council, which was tabled at last year’s session of Parliament was met with criticism, especially over the proposed legislation’s granting of authority to the Prime Minister to declare “security zones” which would effectively come under martial law for up to six months at a time.

However, the bill was passed without any major amendments.
