Plea to free Anwar removed from White House petitions website

With just over 3,700 signatures left to hit the 100,000 mark that would prompt the United States government to respond, the petition to free jailed Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has been removed.

The reason — as state on the White House petitions website — reads: “The petition you are trying to access has been removed from the site under our Moderation Policy because it is in violation of our Terms of Participation.”

The petition has been heavily circulated on social media platforms with politicians on the Opposition side lobbying for signatures in support of the plea for Anwar’s freedom.

DAP’s Lim Kit Siang, who had been updating supporters with the latest numbers through his social media channels, gave the last recorded figure on the petition before it was removed. He tweeted: “Below 4k by 10am. Only 3,733 needed 2reach 100k signatures SSSS Anwar. Now 96,267. Power of netizens!”

Protests against Anwar Ibrahim’s Feb 10 jailing have taken the form of street rallies, black attires to the first day of Parliament as well as several lawmakers resorting to go bald in front of Parliament today.

Last month, the 67-year-old politician was sentenced to five years in jail after the Federal Court upheld a Court of Appeal decision that found Anwar guilty of sodomising his ex-aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.
