Phew! Government confirms no toll hikes this year and the next

Finally, there’s some good news for us poor Malaysians!

Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has confirmed that there will be no toll hikes for four major highways in the country this year as well as the next.

The New Straits Times reports that the government will fork out RM59.77mil as compensation to four highway concessionaires.

Fadilah told the daily that the Cabinet had agreed to postpone the restructuring of the toll rates for 2016 and 2017, and they would pay the compensation as long as the concessionaires agree to not raise the toll prices for the four highways.

“This means that there will be no toll hikes for the four highways this year and in 2017,” he was quoted as saying.

On Tuesday, rumours started speculating online that the toll prices for the Kajang-Seremban Highway (Lekas), the Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE), the Johor Baru Eastern Dispersal Link Expressway (EDL) and the Senai–Desaru Expressway (SDE) will see an increase next year.

The last major toll hike happened in October last year, which affected 18 highways and saw an increase of between RM0.20 and RM2.30.
