Authorities in Petaling Jaya will enforce a ban on polystyrene beginning Sept 1.
According to a report by The Star Online‘s Sheila Sri Priya, the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) announced that it would start imposing compounds and issue warning notices to traders who continue using polystyrene packaging after the date.
The campaign reportedly began three years ago.
“We have to start somewhere and it is time we take measures to tackle the polystyrene waste. Start using biodegradable food containers and the cost of such containers will go down. When there is enough demand to justify mass production, the cost of producing these biodegradable items will reduce,” Petaling Jaya mayor Mohd Azizi Mohd Zain was quoted as saying.
The Star said that a MBPJ study on four Ramadan bazaars last year revealed that 181.74 tonnes of rubbish had to be collected from almost 1,400 stalls.
