The Pekeliling Flats, the second oldest highrise housing project in the country, is to be finally torn down beginning today, years after being vacated to make way for new land developments.
The housing development, officially named the Tunku Abdul Rahman Flats, were built from 1964 to 1967. In 1995, the government decided to clear out the projects to make way for urban renewal efforts and to mitigate the rising crime associated with the Pekeliling Flats. In mid-2006, Blocks A and B of the development were demolished, but the project’s other nine blocks have until now remained standing, creating a haven for drug abusers and the homeless. The entire Pekeliling Flats housing project was officially vacated in 2008.
Utusan Malaysia Online has been given access to the demolition site, and are now liveblogging the process.
